From 1 July 2016, eligible international students will apply for a Student (Subclass 500) Visa regardless of their chosen course of study, while their guardians will apply for a Student Guardian (Subclass 590) Visa.
Student (Subclass 500) Visa
- A temporary visa allowing students to study in Australia for the duration of their course of study.
- Meet Genuine Temporary Entrant requirement.
- Evidence of 12 months’ living costs for student applicants and each of their dependent family members.
- Evidence of first 12 months’ annual course fees for student applicant.
- Evidence of first 12 months’ schooling costs for each school-age dependent.
- An approved English test result taken within the previous 2 years.
- Meet health and character requirements.
- Acceptable health insurance.
Student Guardian (Subclass 590) Visa
- Provides for certain persons to reside with a student in Australia, where the student requires a guardian, ie: the student is under 18 years of age.
- Study up to 3 months or study ELICOS for 20 hours per week for duration of visa.
- Meet Genuine Temporary Entrant requirement.
- Sufficient funds for airfares and living costs.
- Meet health and character requirements.
- Acceptable health insurance.
If you are an international student recently completed an Australian education, a Temporary Graduate (Subclass 485) visa may be available to you.
Temporary Graduate (Subclass 485) Visa
- This visa allows eligible international students who have completed an Australian education to stay in Australia to gain work experience.
- You can work in Australia for a period of 18 months to up to 4 years, depending on your qualification.
- It has no work restrictions.
- Applications for this visa must be made in Australia and you must hold an eligible student visa in the last 6 months.
- You must meet Australian study, English proficiency, health insurance, health and character requirements.
- You must meet the specific requirements of the stream (graduate work stream or post-study work stream) in which you are applying for under this visa subclass.
For shorter periods of study, you can apply for a Visitor or Working Holiday Visa.
Visitor (Subclass 600) Visa | Electronic Travel Authority (Subclass 601) Visa | eVisitor (Subclass 651) Visa
- Maximum 3 months study.
- Intention to visit Australia temporarily is genuine.
- Meet health and character requirements.
- Sufficient funds to support yourself during your stay in Australia.
Working Holiday (Subclass 417) Visa | Work and Holiday (Subclass 462) Visa
- Maximum 4 months study.
- Aged 18 to 30 years and hold an eligible passport.
- Principal purpose is to holiday in Australia.
- Enter or remain in Australia as a genuine visitor.
- Meet health and character requirements.
- Sufficient funds for airfares and personal support for stay in Australia.
