“Can I apply for Australian citizenship?”
The Australian government encourages permanent residents of Australia to apply for Australian citizenship when they become eligible.
You are eligible for Australian citizenship if you meet these residence requirements:
- as a permanent resident for 12 months; and
- being lawfully resident* in Australia for 4 years immediately prior to application for citizenship; and
- absences from Australia of no more than 1 year in the last 4 years and no more than 90 days in the 12 months immediately before applying.
*Lawful residence includes time spent on temporary visas prior to grant of permanent residency.
